Opportunities for Learning Volunteers

Bletchley Park is an exciting and stimulating environment for enquiring minds. Target audiences include people of all ages: students of all ages, families and mature age visitors. The Trust is a charity and receives no public funding. We therefore rely heavily on our team of dedicated Learning Volunteers. Find out how to apply here.

We endeavour to make a visit to Bletchley Park an inspirational learning experience for all and we run an active Education Programme for schools and colleges in particular. To support the Programme, we need enthusiastic Learning Volunteers to communicate their passion for Maths, Science & History to our visitors, especially groups of school & college students and their teachers.

Learning Volunteers most often find themselves speaking to groups or taking them around the Museums exhibits, explaining

  • The complexities of the Enigma machine;
  • How enciphered enemy messages were captured, cracked, read and what happened to the intelligence;
  • How the men and women of Bletchley Park lived and worked;
  • The story of the world’s first modern computer;
  • How to encipher and decipher messages;
  • The mathematical and scientific principles underpinning this work, etc. etc.

Learning Volunteers engage with their audiences to

  • Ensure that the heroic men and women who served at Bletchley Park during WWII are remembered and support the National Curriculum in History and Citizenship;
  • Encourage life-long appreciation and enthusiasm for the Curriculum disciplines that underpinned the codebreakers’ work, namely Mathematics, Science &, Technology;
  • Inspire young people to choose career paths that enable them to use Maths, Science & Technology and to safeguard the UK’s leading roles in those fields.

We ask Learning Volunteers to commit to at least one day per week, on average, with some weeks being busier than others, depending on what types of visits groups have booked. A typical day may last from 9.30 to 16.00 (including breaks). Occasionally, there are opportunities to work on special events, for example to contribute to themed school activities or to represent the Park on exhibits and displays at external fairs and shows. These sometimes occur on weekends or bank holiday Mondays.

Could you communicate your passion for Maths, Science & History to our visitors? Do you like interacting with people, young and old? Could you spare 1 or 2 days a week or fortnight for Bletchley Park? Apply now to become a Learning Volunteer!
